Packing List - Clothing

Remember, pack light. No, I mean really light. The key for the independent backpacking traveler is the flexibility and adaptability that this form of travel offers. When coming up with your packing checklist keep this key in mind. Carrying the kitchen sink will probably hinder you in taking that spur of the moment trek. If you are like me, this flexibility is the big reason to avoid a tour with a planned hour by hour itinerary. Wait; check that lazy side screaming 'whooohooo - no planning', because with a little fore thought and planning you can increase your ability to be adaptable to those unexpected side adventures.

A good place to start is by knowing where and when you are going. Seems obvious enough, but ask yourself will it be hot, will it be cold, wet, rainy and snowy and those answers will create a nice checklist of clothing to pack. You can find climate (average temperatures, rainfall, etc.) in the guide books. It's always good if you can get dual purpose out of anything, clothing included. Those convertible pants-to-shorts are great. Here is a partial packing checklist that I have found (somewhat) helpful in the past:

[] 1 pair of shoes
[] 1 pair of flip-flops (great for those sketch showers)
[] 3-5 pairs of socks
[] 5-7 pairs of underwear
[] 1-2 pairs of shorts
[] 1-2 pants/skirts
[] 2 shirts/blouses
[] 1 sweater
[] 1 light jacket
[] bathing suit
[] 1 hat
[] 1 semi-nice outfit (for those unexpected dinner dates)

Remember your packing checklist for clothes will be dictated by where and when you are going. If you plan to visit base camp of Everest, I'm betting that 1 light jacket may turn into 1 heavy parka. Almost everyone I've talked to on the road has brought more clothing than necessary. For some reason everyone tends to wear the same things over and over again. Are you really going to wear this?

Packing List - Backpack
When ever I'm getting ready for a trip, I have to search around for a packing list. I finally sat down and pulled together some list and notes and compiled a list. I put them here so I could find them easily, but thought some of you might be able to use it.
