Half Dome Hike

Update March 2010 - The National Park Service has instituted a Half Dome Hiking Permit mandate for summer weekends. The permits are offered on a first come first served basis and it is strongly recommended that you plan ahead.

Half Dome, in Yosemite National Park, is the iconic piece of granite rising nearly 5,000 feet above the Yosemite Valley. Its easily recognizable dome that is cut in half is the subject of countless photographs and artist renderings of the Yosemite Valley. The hike to the summit of Half Dome has become one of the parks most visited trails.

Even though the hike is rated as strenuous and arduous, hikers from all over are drawn to the summit. Partly for the breathtaking views and partly for the pride in saying you climbed ‘The Rock’ in Yosemite the hike on summer weekends is packed.

The 14 mile round-trip hike, takes the average hiker most of the daylight hours – and for some even longer. The Half Dome hike is definitely on the edge of the limit of a day hike. But it rewards with beautiful vistas: “Along the way, you'll see outstanding views of Vernal and Nevada Falls, Liberty Cap, Half Dome, and--from the shoulder and summit--panoramic views of Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra” as the National Park’s website states.
